In May 2002, I completed a thesis on partisan fighters in Lithuania after WWII. It was a distinction project for Boston University:
Lithuanian sons, daughters, fathers, and mothers have fought for the independence of their country many times over. They have experienced ruthless massacres, betrayals, and degradation at the hands of Russians and Soviets. One of the bloodiest chapters in this history was the one spanning from 1944-53, when Lithuanian guerrilla fighters amassed a force large enough to resist the Soviet forces streaming into Lithuania replacing the retreating Nazi occupiers. During the summer of 2004, I wrote an article on Lithuanian politics for Lithuanian Heritage Magazine:
"Shaquille O'Neal would never understand the intricacies of Lithuanian basketball," my colleague Trygve Olson often jokes. As a Lithuanian American working on political campaigns in Lithuania, I think back to this metaphor regularly. It represents the way that many Lithuanian politicians think about Lithuanian politics - that the Westerners they have hired to consult on their campaigns could not possibly understand the differences between Western and Lithuanian politics. I did a radio spot for M1 radio in Vilnius during the summer of 2004. My voice is at the end of the track. I think I sound pretty good.
